Celebrating 26 Years of International Diversity

1981-2007

¤ DIRECTOR'S CORNER ¤

Dear Friends of International House,

I want to thank all of you that have expressed your support for my appointment as Interim Executive Director. International House is a great organization which attracts and retains passionate volunteers, staff and board members. We are always looking to involve people with an interest in understanding international diversity, promoting citizen diplomacy or advocating for people of diverse national backgrounds.

During my interim period of four months, I intend to focus a great deal of my attention in the following areas: building and strengthening relationships (staff, board, partner agencies and donors); increasing operational efficiency (reviewing procedures, documented project plans, etc.); developing a pilot program performance metric system; and diversifying and stabilizing our funding base.

I would like to hear from you if you have ideas to share that would guide and assist me in this process. Please contact us to get involved with one of our many programs and services as a participant or volunteer.

In September, we have a very exciting and much anticipated Gala planned for your enjoyment, "Autumn Splendour:The Colours and Flavours of Canada." The focus of the gala this year is Canadian arts, music and culture. For more details and to make a reservation visit our
website.

Again, I want to thank you for your support and involvement with International House. Feel free to call me to discuss ways that International House can improve our programs and services and I look forward to having you get involved.

Sincerely,
Bill Garcia
Interim Executive Director

¤ New Volunteer Tutors Training Sessions for the English Tutoring Program ¤

Would you like to make a long lasting difference in a newcomer's life? Would you like to help someone to learn English?

We are currently seeking community volunteers who are interested in becoming trained tutors for our English Tutoring Program (ETP)!

The goal of ETP is to promote self-sufficiency among immigrants, as they gain knowledge and confidence in their English language abilities for integration into our community. ETP specifically targets newcomers unable to access traditional ESL classes due to financial or physical constraints (i.e., lack of transportation, low literacy level, and limited time availability).

As a Volunteer Tutor we will ask you:

  • To participate in three 3-hour training sessions in September;
  • To donate 1 ½ hours a week for each tutoring session starting in mid-September for a full academic term;
  • To meet with the ESL Instructor at the end of the term to review your student's progress.

International House offers three training sessions for interested volunteer tutors:
September 11, 13, 18!

If you are interested in tutoring or you know somebody who will benefit from one-on-one English tutoring, please contact Maria Seaman, Client Service Coordinator at 704-333- 8099, ext.10.

¤International Book Club
September Meeting¤

The international book club summer break is over!!!

For the September 17 meeting of the book club, members have selected the work of Dave Eggers - "What Is the What."

In a heartrending and astonishing novel, Eggers illuminates the history of the civil war in Sudan through the eyes of Valentino Achak Deng, a refugee now living in the United States.

The book follows his life as he's driven from his home as a boy and walks, with thousands of orphans, to Ethiopia, where he finds safety - for a time. Valentino's travels, truly Biblical in scope, bring him in contact with government soldiers, janjaweed-like militias, liberation rebels, hyenas and lions, disease and starvation - and a string of unexpected romances. Ultimately, Valentino finds safety in Kenya and, just after the millennium, is finally resettled in the United States, from where this novel is narrated.

*** International Book Club is an open invitation for anyone who is interested in dialogue on good books by international authors and themes. The club meets the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 PM at International House.***
