U.S. Politics
February 9-13, 2008
The Citizen Diplomacy Program will be
hosting five high-level municipal leaders,
Parliament members, and journalists from
Croatia for a program studying the "U.S.
Political System and Elections". To
understand the U.S. federal system of
government and observe political campaigns
the visitors will attend a City Council
meeting, and meet with Representatives from
the Democratic and Republican parties, the
Charlotte Observer and the Mayor's Office.
2008 NCIV Conference "Citizen Diplomacy -
Democracy in Action"
February 13-16, 2008
Mr. Bill Garcia, Executive Director of
International House will join our Citizen
Diplomacy team, Ms. Lara Printz, Senior
Program Manager and Ms. Laura Young, Program
Associate to the 2008 NCIV National
Meeting. In addition, Ms. Printz will be
featured as a panelist for one of the
conference's workshops, "Beyond the Art: The
Advanced Science of Programming." The
Conference seeks to deepen participants'
understanding of U.S. public diplomacy, U.S.
foreign policy, and the International
Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).
Property Rights
February 9-13, 2008
We will be hosting a Multiregional project
of eight government officials, business
leaders, attorneys, judges and law
enforcement officers for a program on "Protection
of Intellectual Property Rights". The
program will explore the protection of
Intellectual Property Rights in the U.S.,
focusing on Intellectual Property crimes
from the enforcement angle and business
perspective. The group will examine issues
related to the pirating of copy written
visual imagery at NASCAR Images, meet with
local law enforcement officers and IPR
attorneys.
Women Business Leaders
February 9-13, 2008
International House is pleased to host four
women business leaders from Europe for a
program on "Business Development Issues
for Women Business Leaders". The group
will gain insight into initiatives which
expand opportunities for women business
owners through meetings with: Women's
Automotive Solutions, LifeWorks Program at
Bank of America, the Belk College of
Business Administration, Ben Craig Center,
and the National Association of Women
Business Owners (NAWBO).
Exploring Islam
February 13- 15, 2008
The Citizen Diplomacy Program of
International House will be hosting five
education, religion and government officials
from Azerbaijan for a program on "Islam
in America". This project on Islam is
designed to expose Muslim leaders to the
practice of religion in America - including
not only Islam, but Christianity, Judaism
and others. The participants will gain
insights into the core American value of
freedom of religion and the separation of
church and state through meetings with
Muslim leaders, local citizens, faith
representatives, schools, and civil rights
organizations.
Female Leaders
February 21 - 26, 2008
Charlotte's International Visitor Leadership
Program will host six government and social
leaders from Iraq for a program focusing on:
"Women as Political and Social Leaders."
The Charlotte segment will expose the
participants to intercultural exchange
opportunities, economic and social
development issues and highlight the role of
media through meetings with the Muslim Women
of the Carolinas, National Association of
Women Business Owners (NAWBO), North
Carolina Council for Women and Domestic
Violence Commission, Assistance League of
Charlotte, Bank of America, LifeWorks
Program, and Charlotte Observer.
Quit Smoking with Russian Health
Officials
February 26 - 29, 2008
International House will host twelve
healthcare, law and education officials from
Russia for a program on "Anti-Smoking
Efforts." The program will enable
participants to study different techniques
for raising public awareness of health
problems associated with smoking. Through
meetings with the Mecklenburg County Health
Department's "Teen Tobacco Use Prevention
and Cessation Initiative", Mecklenburg
ASSIST Coalition , BODY WORLDS "I QUIT"
Program specialist, American Heart
Association's Start! Program, and Welplex
Stop Smoking Clinic, participants will learn
about various laws and regulations regarding
smoke-free workplaces and will be able to
examine the relationship between private and
public anti-smoking partnerships.
Youth and American Politics
March 12-15, 2008
We will be hosting six University student
activists, young elected officials and
political party leaders from various African
countries for a program focusing on "The
Role of Youth in the U.S. Political Process".
The program will examine the role of young
political leaders in the U.S. Participants
will meet with University of North Carolina
at Charlotte, various youth university
groups, Kids Voting, and Providence Day
School to learn more about the U.S.
political system, from college campuses to
political party activism and appointive or
elective office.
