International House

Help international house transform an old school into a community center for international and cultural organizations…. Make your gift today!

At the end of this year, we at International House must say good-bye to our home of almost 30 years on Hawthorne Lane. But as one chapter ends, another exciting story is about to unfold. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education voted to give International House master tenant status at the former Midwood High School, 1817 Central Avenue under a long term lease.

Home HostingOUR VISION
International House is poised to transform an empty school into a vibrant hub of cultural and international activity. More importantly, we will continue to provide our signature programs and services. We offer direct services to immigrants and internationals needing assistance to successfully integrate into the Charlotte community (naturalization services through our immigration law clinic, and educational and language classes). We also raise awareness about Charlotte’s wonderful mixture of diverse cultures through intercultural events and programs, and we facilitate international visitor exchange programs with high-level international guests from around the world.

International House will continue to be the place where Charlotte welcomes the world. But we need your support to help us cover the one-time costs of relocation, general building upgrades, grounds improvements, and renovations to International House’s new offices.

We need your help. Another $75,000 gets us to our goal.

The former Midwood High School is an incredible building that will offer much better office and classroom space for International House’s clients, staff, and volunteers. But, it is too big and costly for us to operate alone. Therefore, we have seized the opportunity to create a coalition of like-minded partners to share this wonderful facility with us. With several tenant groups, the Midwood International & Cultural Center (MICC) can provide affordable space for like-minded organizations and flourish as a re-invented campus of cultural activity. It is ideally located in the Plaza Midwood area of Central Avenue, one of the most internationally diverse areas of Charlotte.

International House will be able to provide our clients, staff, and volunteers with more space, alleviating the crowded office and classroom situations that are problems at our current location. Even more, we can look forward to shared synergies and creative programming possibilities with our neighboring tenants at MICC. It is a win-win for our clients and theirs!

International House has created an LLC, “Midwood International & Cultural Center”, as the umbrella entity to govern the coalition of tenant organizations. Currently, the following groups will be joining International House at MICC: Logo

      • Japanese Association of Charlotte
      • Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Cultural Association
      • One Ethiopian Community of Charlotte
      • Language Academy of the Carolinas
      • Time Out Youth
      • League of Women Voters

Your donation is fully tax-deductible.

International House is proud of our legacy of loyal support from long term friends and volunteers. Our capital campaign honorary co-chairs, Tony and Lakana Bikhazi, have been involved with International House programs for many years.

Join us! We need YOU to help International House relocate to a better facility as we launch Midwood International & Cultural Center. Make your gift today!

We are happy to report that all rooms in the part of MICC that will be used by International House have been sponsored by generous donors during the silent phase of our capital campaign. However, we still seek sponsorship of rooms on the main floor that will be used by other tenant organizations. These rooms are located off main hallways in high traffic areas and donors will be acknowledged on plaques outside each room.
