On July 4, 1994, International House began
offering Citizenship Classes to foreign nationals from all over
the world. Since that time, International House has trained over
650 individuals on the intricacies of becoming a United States Citizen.
Each citizenship class is composed of three-hour sessions over
five consecutive Sunday afternoons. Workshops focus on major areas
of the CIS test and interview preparation, while incorporating
basic English skills. An extensive review of history, American
government and political system is taught with emphasis on individual
proficiency and need. Presentation by a local immigration attorney
is provided to address the reason to become a citizen, moral character
questions, concerns of naturalization, and possible problems with
prior entries and/or misrepresentation. Emphasis is placed on
the responsibilities of United States citizenship such as voting,
and civic and community responsibilities. Cost for course is $50.00
and includes book, tape, and other materials. Scholarships are
available by request, if costs are prohibitive.
