| English Tutor Program |
 |
The
English Tutor Program (ETP) at International House is designed to
help meet the needs of Charlotte's growing international community,
by training volunteer tutors and matching them with internationals
with English language needs.
|
| |
 |
| |
| This program typically serves those who
have difficulty accessing other language learning options, or need
special assistance.
After completing a fifteen-hour training program”,
volunteer tutors are matched up with an individual
with whom they conduct informal classes in a public place, such as a library branch, on a weekly basis. The pairing of students and tutor is also based on the hour availability of both and on the library of choice. Ultimately, the goal of the program is to promote
self-sufficiency among international newcomers, as they gain knowledge
and confidence in their language abilities. |
| |
This
is the fifteenth year that International House has offered the English
Tutor Program. ETP began in 1993 when International House joined
forces with the Catholic Social Services Refugee Office to train
tutors for the recently resettled Montagnard refugees. To date,
the program has trained more than 480 tutors and served over 500
internationals.
