JOB OPENING:  PART-TIME LEGAL ASSISTANT

            International House is seeking a part-time legal assistant for its Immigration Law Clinic to work 30 hours weekly.  The Clinic, staffed by two attorneys, two paralegals, and a part-time legal assistant, provides legal representation to low-income immigrants in family immigration and naturalization cases in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region.  The legal assistant in the Immigration Law Clinic will work directly with the immigration paralegals under the supervision of the clinic director in client liaison and service. 

  • The legal assistant will be responsible for the following tasks: 
  • Interviewing prospective clients by telephone and obtaining necessary information
  • Answering phones
  • Making appointments for clients
  • Opening files for new clients
  • Entering data in preparation for drafting of immigration documents
  • Photocopying client documents
  • Telephoning the customer service office of the US Citizen and Immigration Services to ascertain the status of cases
  • Assisting with file closings and statistical records
  • Assisting with promotion and outreach programs for the Immigration Clinic and Education Department of International House and coordinating aspects of these programs

Requirements:  Ability to work effectively and compassionately with people of all cultures; Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree or equivalent experience in the United States or internationally; interest in immigration law; Bilingual in Spanish & English or competency in written and spoken English and Spanish; cultural competency and ability to deal compassionately with low-income people; respect for confidentiality; excellent client liaison and communication skills; computer literacy; attention to accuracy and detail. Salary:  The position is part-time for 30 hours per week, at an hourly rate of $12.88 per hour. This is a grant funded position until the end of 2013 with the possibility of renewal.
