English Tutoring Program

As an English Tutor in our English Tutoring Program (ETP), you'll help a fellow adult to develop literacy skills that are needed for employment and acclimation into our community. Tutors and students will be paired for a two-hour tutoring session during one of two time slots.

Tutors and students will use the ESL series “Side by Side” by Pearson and “Ventures” by Cambridge. A tutoring facilitator will be present during the tutoring sessions and can answer your questions.

The commitment runs twelve weeks. The week prior to start, IH staff will provide an orientation and training for new tutors.

The next cycle of ETP will run Thursdays, September 15 - December 8.  New tutor orientation will be Thursday, September 8, from 6 - 8 p.m.

Citizenship Tutoring Program

Citizenship Tutors help foreign-born adults study for a naturalization interview for U.S. citizenship. Staff provide study materials so that tutors can "pre-teach" vocabulary and concepts in a one-on-one setting prior to group lessons. If you like U.S. history, politics and government, then this role is a great match for you! Tutors and students work one-on-one to practice reading, writing, and civics skills that are essential to pass the naturalization interview. Afterwards, students continue learning in a two-hour class taught by other instructors.

The next six-week session will run Sundays, June 5 - July 17.    New tutor orientation will be Sunday, June 5, 2016, from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Time Commitment:

  • The next six-week cycle of CTP will run from June 5 - July 17.
  • Tutors and students are paired on Sunday 1:30 - 3 p.m.  Following the tutoring session, students will attend Citizenship classes taught by other volunteers and staff from 3 - 5 p.m.
