Enrique is a beloved, integral member of Charlotte’s International House community. He has been involved with our organization since 2024, contributing his time, passions and talents to a community that celebrates cultural exchange and belonging.

Originally from Venezuela, Enrique and his wife moved to the United States in 2023 following the challenges affecting their country. Enrique's daughter, a U.S. citizen, made this transition possible through legal family reunion procedures. Like many newcomers, Enrique arrived with hope, determination, and the challenge of adapting to a different language and culture.

Shortly after arriving, both Enrique and his wife took an English placement exam that allowed them to begin language classes at CPCC. His teachers then referred him to IH, where he joined the intermediate-advanced English classes and conversation hours. As part of this journey, Enrique found more than a way to improve language skills: he found community.

As Enrique describes it, International House became a space where he always felt welcomed, safe, and heard. He found meaningful connections and support through conversation hours and interactions with fellow immigrants and volunteers, while navigating life in a new country.

Before immigrating to the U.S., Enrique had built a career as a professor in Venezuela, dedicating much of his life to education. Yet, even after retirement and relocation, his passion for teaching, learning and creating continued to flourish in unexpected ways.

He joined an art group in his local community and became active with The Mint Museum. He enjoys observing places, landscapes, and everyday moments, transforming them into expressive works through his unique artistic perspective and expressionist style.

His passion for art has also strengthened his connection to International House. He donated a painting featuring Charlotte’s Uptown skyline to the organization, now proudly displayed in IH's community room—a meaningful reminder of how immigrants not only adapt to new communities but also enrich them. He also is looking forward to applying to the fifth year of The Journey.

“Interacting directly with people from different cultures and sharing with them is something priceless,” he shared, reflecting on his experience with IH.

Enrique’s story reflects resilience, reinvention, and the importance of finding belonging. Through education, art, and community involvement, he continues to contribute to Charlotte’s multicultural fabric while inspiring others with his openness, creativity, and determination.
